{"id":1155,"date":"2018-01-25T16:55:04","date_gmt":"2018-01-25T16:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/josephineanstey.com\/wp\/?page_id=1155"},"modified":"2020-01-31T16:20:36","modified_gmt":"2020-01-31T16:20:36","slug":"staying-with-the-trouble","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/josephineanstey.com\/?page_id=1155","title":{"rendered":"Staying with the Trouble"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/Assets\/Books\/978-0-8223-6224-1_pr.jpg\" alt=\"book cover\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>** Intro to &#8220;Staying with the Trouble&#8221; **<\/p>\n<p>Context1: Mental Model\/Frame<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thought processes of how things are\/how things work\u00a0 &#8211; made up of facts, intuitions, experiences, stereotypes and unquestioned assumptions.<\/li>\n<li>We all carry many frames about (the sky is blue, we eat lunch at noon, the world is round).<\/li>\n<li>These frames are cultural and historical but we often don&#8217;t notice that unless we read history or cross cultures.<\/li>\n<li>They change through history (assumptions about race, sexuality and gender have changed radically in last 100 years).<\/li>\n<li>BUT<\/li>\n<li>We tend to fit new information into our existing frames.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Context 2: Darwinism and Capitalism<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two ideas\/frames that organize much of contemporary thinking\/experience<\/li>\n<li>They are often simplified to &#8220;survival of the fittest&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;free markets&#8221; &#8220;eat or be eaten&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Some implications are\n<ul>\n<li>that our economic system is natural<\/li>\n<li>that competition is an unavoidable biological and social law<\/li>\n<li>that competition rather than co-operation is fundamental<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If we use the concept of competition to frame our understanding, how much will we see competition everywhere and reproduce that competition?<\/li>\n<li>Das Kapital, Karl Marx (1867); On the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin (1859)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Donna Haraway says:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It matters what concepts we use to think with.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;It matters what thoughts think thoughts. It matters what knowledges know knowledge. It matters what relations relate relations. It matters what worlds world worlds. It matters what stories tell stories.&#8221; p 35<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Staying with the Trouble<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Starts with ideas\/frames from recent biological investigations that question the primacy of competition,\u00a0 and emphasize instead co-operation, co-development, relationships, connections, symbiosis.<\/li>\n<li>What happens if we use these frames to understand\/experience and live in the world? What would we understand? What would we reproduce?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This semester we are going to use Haraway&#8217;s alternative framing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To think about current state of world<\/li>\n<li>As an analytic tool for media projects<\/li>\n<li>How do the projects that you will watch\/play\/experience\/listen to anticipate, reflect,\u00a0 or elucidate Haraway&#8217;s frame?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Haraway&#8217;s tone<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>not an easy read &#8211; complicated texts take time and rereading &#8211; but even skimming will get you something &#8211; so persist!<\/li>\n<li>H. committed to not simplify &#8211; see frame above, its about connections and tangled webs of life, not simple eat or be eaten ideas<\/li>\n<li>playful with language and words &#8211; asks you sometimes to keep multiple meanings in play<\/li>\n<li>we will jump about, double back and maybe read the same thing again<\/li>\n<li>a main aspect of the class will be to see if we have understood her<\/li>\n<li>notice half the book is footnotes! read them!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>** End of Intro **<\/p>\n<p>Haraway, (SWTT), Chap 1\u00a0 &#8220;California Racing Pigeons,&#8221; &#8220;Pigeon Blog&#8221;, &#8220;Reliable Voyageurs&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what are companion species? oddkin?
