Description
This course will focus on thematic, conceptual and creative issues as students produce computer-based works for interactive media. It will be a place for students to initiate and follow through on substantive projects based both in creative concepts and technical research. It will be open to any and all types of computer-based or technology-driven work, projects designed exclusively for viewing with computer and monitor and projects that involve installation or physical computing elements. Students should come with considerable skills in this area, be motivated to try new things, and be prepared for critiques.

Technologies/Platforms In small work groups, students will be introduced to and build small projects using the technologies/platforms below. All students in the group will receive the same grade for the project. To get an A, the project MUST WORK in class on the day it is due. Otherwise the project will be graded on creativity and/or technical prowess.

Projects/People of Interest

Grade:

  • participation 35%
  • group project 1 10%
  • group project 2 10%
  • group project 3 10%
  • final project 35%

Requirements and Responsibilities:

preparation and participation - You are expected to meet other students in your group in order to complete group projects. You are expected to research documentation for the technology you are working with. You are expected to attend classes, to be prepared with working projects, and to be ready to critically engage the digital work presented to you and other students' work.

Group Projects: Each student will choose to work with 3 out of the 4 platforms/technologies. In intense 2 week periods students will be introduced to the tech/platform, brainstorm and produce a project, and exhibit the project for peer criticism. All students get the same grade for the project.

Final Project: Students will create a final work of computer-based work for interactive media. This will be a process with three main steps.

Initial Concept/Plan due: March 15

  • To include storyboard/drawings/text explanation

First Testable Version of Project: April 12

  • All interactive work needs to be tested and built with an iterative process

Final Version of Project due: April 26

Attendance:

Attendance for every class is mandatory barring serious emergency. Each student is allowed two unexcused absences for whatever reason (e.g., illness, weather). If extenuating circumstances arise (e.g., serious medical problems, child care), please contact the instructor as soon as possible to address the situation. Barring emergency circumstances, each absence after two will drop lower the final grade by a full grade for each additional absence (i.e.,3 absences = B→C). Punctuality is also expected. For the purposes of grading, three tardies will equal one unexcused absence.

Criteria for Incomplete Grade:

It is the policy of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Media Study to grant incompletes for a semester only under extraordinary circumstances. Under any circumstances, incompletes will be granted only to students currently in good standing (i.e., regular attendance and passing completion of assignments). Requests for a grade of incomplete need to be submitted in writing, and should include a rationale, documentation for the reason, and a proposed schedule for completion.
